what is whois?

Every domain on the internet has an owner — a person or company who registered it and pays to keep it. WHOIS is the public record of who that is. It's been around as long as the web itself, and it's how journalists, lawyers, brand teams, and anyone trying to get in touch with the person behind a website finds them.

Type a domain above and we'll look it up: the registrant's name and organisation where it's published, the country they registered from, the registrar handling the domain, and an abuse contact you can write to if something is wrong. If the owner has used a privacy proxy, we'll show that too — and tell you which one, so you know where to send a disclosure request.

We also keep history. Owners change, companies get acquired, domains quietly transfer hands. When today's WHOIS record doesn't have the answer you need, the archive often does — every previous registrant, every past contact email, every nameserver the domain has ever pointed at, going back to the first time the record was public.
